Ominae Apparel Cashier Training

Workplace Learning · Self-Directed Project · Articulate Rise 360

Project Overview

Ominae Apparel Cashier Training is a self-directed eLearning project developed in Articulate Rise 360 to simulate a retail employee onboarding experience.

Designed for new cashiers and sales associates at a fictional apparel retailer, the course introduces workplace skills related to communication, adaptability, and problem-solving.

I created this project to strengthen my eLearning development skills and explore how responsive, self-paced training can prepare employees to navigate common workplace situations.

Project Snapshot

The Design Challenge

Retail cashiers regularly interact with customers, respond to unexpected situations, and make decisions that affect the customer experience. New employees need more than an understanding of their responsibilities; they also need opportunities to consider how they would respond to common workplace challenges.

For this project, I explored how a self-paced eLearning course could introduce essential interpersonal and problem-solving skills while remaining accessible and engaging for new retail employees.

The design challenge was to create a structured learning experience that connects workplace concepts to realistic cashier scenarios without relying exclusively on traditional, text-heavy instruction.

My Approach

I designed Ominae Apparel Cashier Training around three essential workplace skills: communication, adaptability, and problem-solving.

To make these skills relevant to the cashier role, I organized the course into focused lessons that combine instructional content with realistic workplace scenarios. Learners encounter situations such as responding to a difficult customer, managing a sudden rush, and resolving a pricing discrepancy.

Using Articulate Rise 360, I incorporated interactive scenarios, a step-by-step problem-solving activity, and knowledge checks to help learners connect key concepts to decisions they may encounter on the job.

The course concludes with an assessment designed to reinforce the skills introduced throughout the learning experience.

Design & Development

I developed the course in Articulate Rise 360, using a combination of focused lessons, interactive scenarios, and knowledge checks to introduce workplace skills in a retail setting.

Three elements illustrate how I connected instructional content to practical decision-making.

1. Communication: Responding to a Difficult Customer

The communication lesson includes a scenario involving a customer attempting to return an item without a receipt. This situation gives learners an opportunity to consider how communication skills apply when navigating customer concerns and workplace policies.

I used a scenario-based interaction to connect communication principles to a recognizable retail challenge.

2. Adaptability: Managing a Customer Rush

The adaptability lesson presents a sudden increase in customers, requiring learners to consider how they would respond to changing workplace demands.

This scenario connects the concept of adaptability to the practical challenges of maintaining service quality while managing competing priorities.

3. Problem-Solving: Resolving a Pricing Discrepancy

The problem-solving lesson combines a step-by-step process interaction with a scenario involving a pricing discrepancy.

I used these activities to introduce a structured approach to problem-solving and provide an opportunity for learners to consider how that approach applies to a realistic cashier situation.

Reflection & Opportunities for Improvement

Developing Ominae Apparel Cashier Training gave me an opportunity to explore how Articulate Rise 360 can support structured, self-paced workplace learning.

The project allowed me to practice organizing instructional content, developing scenario-based activities, and incorporating knowledge checks within a responsive eLearning experience.

If I were to develop this course for implementation in a retail organization, I would begin by conducting a needs analysis to identify specific performance expectations and workplace procedures. I would also refine the assessment questions, gather feedback from representative learners, and evaluate whether the training supports successful performance on the job.
